About the Project

DartCounter is the world's leading darts scoring platform, connecting players around the globe through live online matches, local gameplay, competitive tournaments and performance tracking.

With the introduction of Target's OMNI and VIRT camera systems, DartCounter became the first darts application to use image recognition technology for automatic scoring. Combined with live player video, the platform transformed traditional home darts into a connected experience, allowing players to compete against opponents anywhere in the world.

The Challenge

Following a complete brand refresh by leading Dutch brand agency Momkai™, DartCounter wanted its product experience to evolve alongside its new visual identity.

The redesign wasn't simply about updating the interface. The app needed to support an expanding feature set, accommodate new connected hardware and establish a scalable foundation for future development.

At the same time, it was essential that the experience remained familiar to existing players. Millions of users already relied on DartCounter, so introducing change without disrupting established behaviours became a key part of the challenge.

A New Design System for a New Identity

The first stage of the redesign focused on establishing a scalable design system. Working from Momkai's refreshed brand identity, I created an early style guide and a reusable component library, building every component to support both light and dark mode.

This provided a consistent visual language rulebook that could then be applied across the entire application and a flexible foundation that could scale as the platform continued to evolve.

A New Visual Experience

With the design system and style guide established, attention turned to the app's core experience.

The first priority was redesigning the primary screens and user journeys that players interacted with most, applying the new visual language across both light and dark mode while simplifying navigation and improving consistency throughout the product.

Once the core experience was complete, the remaining screens and supporting journeys were redesigned to ensure the product felt consistently on brand from end to end.

Alongside the core redesign, I also designed experiences for Target's OMNI and VIRT camera systems, introducing workflows that supported automated scoring through image recognition. From hardware setup and onboarding to live gameplay and score validation, every interaction was designed to make the technology feel like a natural extension of the game rather than an additional layer of complexity.

“We’re very happy with the end results and designs for the new features”

“Ross’s redesigns brought the app layout up to date which was amazing to implement over the last year, alongside integrating new features into the app as well.

Meeting face-to-face initially meant Ross could properly understand the requirements and turn them into fully functional designs that added to the overall user experience. Very happy with the end results and designs for the new features.”
